Back from the dead

It's been a long time, I shouldn't have left you, but I had my reasons. Wow! There's such a shitload of Mp3 blogs now isn't there!?

There's much work that needs to be done here, a total revamp and clean up and I will be doing that in the next couple of weeks but here's a bit of music to be going on with...


Telepathe-Michael

From the forthcoming album 'Dance Mother' which I'm liking very much. Likely you've heard the single Chrome's On It and if you liked it I would highly recommend the album.

Michael J. Sheehy-Love Me

Growing up and going to school in Camden, London in the 90's nights were often spent in dingy smoky clubs and pubs pretending to be aloof and perfecting silly indie dance moves. It was after all the centre of the "Britpop" explosion (well in the media's eyes anyway) we would frequent gigs at the Bull & Gate in Kentish Town and watch elder sister's bands aspiring to be The Breeders. Michael was also a regular at the B & G, he would often play gigs and got together a band Dream City Film Club who had a brief dalliance with 'next big thing' status. In fact both Michael and Dream City Film Club released a couple of albums on Beggars Banquet but unfortunately they didn't amount to much. On listening to this again after a couple of years not hearing it the song is a little dated but I still really enjoy it and on a personal level I know who it's about and the story surrounding it so I suppose that helps to secure my affection. Love Me is reminiscent of the Tindersticks which will know if you read the blog regularly is a rather good thing. Download more of Michael's music at Epitonic and buy his stuff here

Cathy Davey-Clean and Neat

As there are so many Mp3 blogs out there now, I'm really not sure if this might have been posted by someone else, obviously I had a look but didn't see her crop up anywhere-but you know I can miss these things so apologies if I'm lapsing. Cathy Davey is an Irish singer songwriter.....no......wait.........come back...............She's not armed with Dido lyrical angst muddle guns or Norah Jones keys of slow dull death, she's sprightly and sweet. A bit of folk under one arm whilst strumming some girly Britpop with the other Davey's sugary sweet vocals complete a catchy indie pop number that pleases with it's joyous simplicity. Buy single and the album here (price in Euros).


Gold Chains & Sue Cie-California Nites

This song is the kind of thing I thought Gold Chains was always aspiring to be but never quite got there. On his forthcoming album When the World Was Our Friend from which this is taken, he has collaborated with singer/producer Sue Cie. It works fair to good for the most part and the album is a grower but aside from this track I was still left feeling a bit unsatisfied and wanting to change little bits of the songs that would make them that much better. The album is released in October on the ever productive Kitty-Yo.

I've decided to do some occasional posts on tragedy in songs, so here's part one. Really this song is pretty humorous but it definitely teeters on the edge of insanity. The bereaved Jimmy talks most of the way through and finishes the song, well...you have to listen to it to find that out. A true morbid tragedy rock 'n' roll classic.

August bank holiday is always an excuse for people in the UK to get wreaked and completely over do it, to be honest I doubt it'll be any different for me what with friends birthday celebrations and the high possibility of attending the Cross Central festival.


Considering using Adwise through blogger but
a) I probably don't get enough hits for it to be worth it
b) Of the the people that do read my blog really I can't see many of them clicking ads.
c) Would I then be 'selling out'?
d) Not really likely the ads would be that relevent
However..
1) I could really do with some cash to help with hosting
2) I could really do with some cash full stop.

Wanda Jackson-Funnel Of Love

Carl Perkins-Daddy Sang Bass


I'm in a rockabilly mood today and I rock a quiff frequently so it makes sense to post some tracks in this vain. Wanda Jackson dubbed the 'first lady of rockabilly' is still making music and is now apparently 'a grand lady of country'. This classic is from 1962 and as with yesterdays post it's all about Wanda's great distinctive voice. Visit Wanda's site. Carl Perkins was undoubtably overshadowed by a certain king, he recorded the original 'Blue Suede Shoes' but it was Elvis that had the bigger hit with it and he never quite got the fame that might have been coming to him. Daddy Sang Bass is pretty honky-tonk and it charms my socks off with its fresh faced jolliness even though it's essentially about death. I'm pretty much able to ignore the religious side. It may just be me but I reckon that it could be sampled and used to lethal effect in a hip-hop song.



Tindersticks-Traveling Light

This is by far my favourite Tindersticks song it's taken from their 1995 album Tindersticks second album and if you don't know this band and their quiet menace you should pick this album or the anthology Donkeys 1992-1997. I'd love to get hold of some of their early limited 7" if anyone's got some they're looking to get rid of, they were packaged in the simple beauty of a brown paper bag.

Crayola crayon colour cd project

Basically the idea is that I send a CDRW to someone it will have one song and a custom cover with a drawing in my favourite crayola crayon colour. The person it is sent to then adds a track to the CD and their own drawing on the cover in their favourite Crayola crayon colour and sends it on the next person on the list and so on, eventually the CD and complete cover comes back to me, I then send everyone who took part a copy of the CD and complete cover art. So you need to have a CD writer and the will to take part in a nice little snail mail project Here is a collection of the colours of the crayons to give you an idea. Tough when you're out of the loop

Ouch it hurts, I had to take a break from posting because I got so hectic and lots of things came at me at once, including some sun and then once I'd stopped I felt a bit lost and now...it's hard I feel like I've just fallen out of the loop (my own one that is) but it's ok I'll get on that again like Vinnie the hamster. I promise myself (and anyone else that might still be checking) that I will be a better blogger dammit. I haven't even had time to check in on my favourite Mp3 blogs to see what everyone else is doing.

Something I do know is that Dizzee Rascal's new album 'Showtime' is going to be massive, honestly HUGE. So good.

Bettye Swann-Don't Touch Me

Why are there no voices like this in pop music anymore, you know, the kind that drip with soul. I mean there are some that attempt it but it's just not the same. Bettye Swann released this in 1968 and had some fame in 1965 with a song called 'Make Me Yours' which was her biggest hit. However like so many other great singers of this ilk she was largely overlooked. In the 70's she moved towards country soul and recorded a cover of Tammy Wynette's 'Till I Get It Right' and she still sounded damn good. I just wish that there was someone out there making music with these kind of voices again, and they could fit them into the modern music mainstream without making it really cheesy a la Diana Ross. UK record label Honest Jons is releasing an anthology of her stuff and you can pre-order it here.


The Cast of Kal Ho Naa Ho-Pretty Woman

This may be both the best and the worst thing I have ever heard. The best because it's just bizarre and yeah the worst because it just so bizarre. This is from the Bollywood movie Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) which roughly translates as 'Tomorrow may never come'. There is a bit in the middle with a man doing a crazed kind of rap and then he says in possibly the most terrifying 'I am a stalker' voice "I'm Crrrrazzy about you pretty woman". Okay, it's the very worst.


Ahhh that feels better now that I've finally got something out I feel like a nun that just broke her vow of silence, sort of. Now where did I put that habit....

Selfish Cunt in good song shocker

Following the Pete Doherty-Selfish Cunt debacle it comes as no surprise that they, the cunt (as they shall from herein be called), have released a new single. It's abrasive, loud and cocky but at least its listenable this time, yeah 'Britain is Shit' got lots of old saggy journalists salivating over how wonderfully shouty and anti-establishment it was, but it should have been renamed 'Britain is shit so you won't mind if our song is too'. This however is something more, better, I mean they're still not the cultural in your face revolutionary bastards they think they are. But this has raw energy, snot spitting and plenty of attitude even if it's occasionally misplaced. It might also explain the cunt's obvious dislike of Mr. Doherty, the song including the lines begging on my streets, that is not allowed, however I might have got that all mixed up, Doherty's not a street urchin is he?. I had difficulty deciding which tracks to post from this lot and even after posting 3 I still felt unsure that I chose the right ones. Anyway I know these guys and two of them lived with my ex while we were all at uni. I haven't seen them for a while because I moved up from sunny Brighton a few months ago. I actually only know those two, but as a whole they're a clever bunch of guys. Joe the drummer is a really talented young man, he has a electronic side project and spends so much time just creating stuff. The band rotate between three singers which helps to keep the sound fresh, it's also the reason I wanted to post more than one track. There is quite a bit of variation in this band which isn't to say that they haven't found their feet yet just that they're proficient in plenty of styles. The tracks are available to download from their website along with a generous amount of rotating others. They also released an EP in 2003 called Days For Hoisting Flags on Government Buildings which I highly recommend you buy here.

Wannabe MCs could rap on Nas' next album
Wannabe MCs are being given the chance to appear on the UK release of the next Nas album, 'Street's Disciple', which is due in Oct. You can download the instrumental to one of the tracks off the album - 'Thief's Theme'. You can then put your own rap on top of the track and send it in. Nas himself will pick his favourite, and the MC behind it will be invited into the studio to record their rap for real for inclusion on the album. check it out here
